KAIST 시각도구연구실은 디자인이 코드, 알고리듬, 생성형 인공지능, 플랫폼 로직 등과 긴밀하게 연결되는 오늘의 디자인 환경을 연구합니다. 기계를 매개체이자 협력자로, 또 잠재적 사용자로 다루면서, 이와 함께 변화하는 디자인 생산의 방식과 협업의 구조를 실험하고, 시각문화의 형성과 유통에서 이러한 기계적 주체가 수행하는 역할을 탐구합니다.

이 연구는 우리가 시각 매체를 통해 세상을 보고 이해하며 의미를 구성하는 방식에 대한 근본적인 질문에서 출발합니다. 매일의 시각 경험을 이루는 다양한 시스템이 가진 전통적 가치와 규범을 되돌아보고, 새로운 도구의 질서가 기술적·미학적·사회적으로 어떻게 형성되고 순환하여 현재와 미래의 문화적 기반으로 이어지는지를 조명합니다.

KAIST 산업디자인학과에 기반을 둔 시각도구연구실은 그래픽 디자인, 시스템적 사고, 컴퓨테이셔널 미학의 교차점에서 활동합니다. 연구, 집필, 도구 개발, 교육 등의 활동을 통해 동시대 디자인을 위한 대안적 도구와 자동–자율화를 위한 방법을 개발하면서, 명확하고 유연하며 비판적 성찰을 이끄는 시각 시스템을 설계합니다.

The Visual Instruments Lab at KAIST investigates the shifting terrain where design converges with code, algorithms, generative AI, and platform logics. In this environment, machines act as both mediators and participants, shaping authorship, collaboration, and the circulation of visual culture.

The research begins with fundamental questions about how visual media formulate the way we see, comprehend, and construct meaning. It examines the cultural norms and value systems embedded in everyday visual experience, and investigates how new orders of instruments—technological, aesthetic, and social—emerge and circulate, ultimately shaping the cultural foundations of the present and near future.

Based in the Department of Industrial Design at KAIST, the Visual Instruments Lab operates at the intersection of graphic design, computational aesthetics, and systems thinking. Through research, writing, toolmaking, and pedagogy, we develop alternative approaches and instruments for contemporary design—toward more legible, adaptable, and autonomous, yet critically engaged visual systems.
